Wilhelmspalais City Museum, Stuttgart
The Wilhelmspalais, built in 1840, had housed Stuttgart’s public library since 1965. In the fall of 2011, the city library moved into its new building on Mailänder Platz and the building became vacant. This marked the start of planning for the new city museum, which the Stuttgart City Council had already approved in principle in 2007. The Europe-wide competition was won by the Stuttgart-based consortium Lederer + Ragnarsdóttir + Oei (architecture) and jangled nerves (exhibition design). Their concept: the listed outer walls of the building will remain, the interior will be completely gutted and the museum will be rebuilt as a “building within a building”. This made it possible to turn the original two storeys into four storeys, invisible from the outside, and to accommodate a technical storey.
An effective ventilation system now ensures the well-being of the people and the protection of the exhibits in the building. Fan coil units VFC, QVC and induction units HFVsf and QHG are installed, i.e. almost the entire range of LTG sill units. They are located between the original outer wall and the new inner wall made of light-colored wood. The air is blown upwards and forwards under the windows and only forwards between the windows as displacement air. There are no special air outlet grilles; the air outlet openings are cut directly into the wooden panels.
And that was the task for LTG Ingenieur-Dienstleistungen: They had to find out how much free air outlet area was required for the supply air and how to design the shape, size and number of openings so that everything not only worked, but also pleased the architects. It always gets complicated when physics and optics have to be reconciled. The laws of currents, thermals and acoustics can only be influenced to a very limited extent.
