The operating principle of a fan coil unit is based on the interaction between air and water. The fan draws in room air and thereby controls the flow rate, which is then passed over the heat exchanger. Depending on whether the system is used for cooling or heating, either cold or hot water flows through the heat exchanger. The cooled or heated air is then returned to the room. Additionally, the room air passes through a filter, which—depending on the design—removes coarse particles, fine dust, or even pollen from the air. As a result, the fan coil unit not only ensures the desired room temperature, but also helps create an optimal indoor air quality.

Fan coil units can be installed in two different system configurations: as a two-pipe or a four-pipe system. The main difference between these systems lies in how they provide heating and cooling functions.

Two-pipe system: In a two-pipe system, both hot and cold water are carried through the same set of pipes. This means the system can either heat or cool, but not both at the same time. The water is switched as needed to achieve the desired temperature. This system is generally simpler and more cost-effective to install, but is best suited for applications where instant switching between heating and cooling is not required.

Depending on the room layout, fan coil units can be selected in various configurations:

This installation method has the advantage of not occupying additional floor space, allowing for discreet and unobtrusive climate control.   • Floor installation: Floor-mounted convectors are integrated into raised floor ducts. This solution is particularly advantageous when walls or ceilings are not suitable for installation. The built-in fan coil unit provide effective room temperature control and remain visually unobtrusive, as they are installed directly in the floor.

  • Parapet installation: These fan coil units are installed directly below windows within the parapet. This positioning is ideal for counteracting cold air that radiates from large window surfaces. Control and regulation of fan coil units

Fan coil units can be regulated using various systems that allow for precise adjustment of airflow and temperature.

One of the simplest methods is damper control. In this setup, motorized dampers direct the airflow either through the heat exchanger or via a bypass into the room. This method allows for flexible adjustment of the airflow based on current needs.

Alternatively, airflow can be controlled via the fan motor. The motor adjusts its speed according to demand, enabling fast or slow airflow as required.

Thermostat-based control of fan coil units

A thermostat, located either inside the fan coil unit or within the room, manages the operating modes of the fan coil unit.
