Ventilation in buildings fulfills several tasks: to guarantee people’s health, i.e. to provide sufficient air of good quality, to ensure thermal comfort and to protect the building, i.e. to remove moisture. The standard therefore also distinguishes between a person-dependent proportion of the air and a building-dependent proportion of the air.

If rooms are not fully occupied during actual use (as was the basis for dimensioning the air handling unit), too much air is continuously introduced into the room. If you consider that occupancy rates of 80% are not uncommon here, plus break and vacation times, and that the required fan power increases to the third power with the volume flow, you can guess what energy saving potential is available here.
